W-4 Withholding Calculator 2027
Withholding tables still ignore the OBBBA deductions. Size your 2027 overtime, tips, senior, and car loan deductions at projected 2027 brackets — get the exact W-4 Step 4(b) figure and what it adds back to every paycheck.
Bracket math: Wolters Kluwer 2027 projection (Sept 2026). Deduction rules: OBBBA P.L. 119-21, in force through tax year 2028.
- Overtime premium: $9,000
Savings = tax at 2027 projected brackets without vs. with your deductions (marginal rate 22%). Keep a safe-harbor cushion (90% of current-year tax or 100% of last year's, 110% over $150k AGI) — under-withholding beyond $1,000 owed triggers penalties.

The January 2027 Checklist
- Pull last year's paystub: YTD overtime hours, tip income, car loan interest paid
- Estimate 2027 totals conservatively (overtime fluctuates)
- Run the calculator above → note the total deduction
- File a fresh W-4: standard deduction estimate + OBBBA deductions in Step 4(b)
- Submit to payroll in January; check the next 1–2 paystubs that federal withholding dropped
- Re-check in July with YTD actuals
Worked Example: The $83/Paycheck Nurse
Single nurse, $45/hour, 400 OT hours, $95,000 MAGI, 2027 projected brackets: premium deduction $9,000, 22% bracket → $2,160 of over-withholding across the year → ≈ $83 per biweekly paycheck. Filing the W-4 in January recovers it through the year; doing nothing delivers the same $2,160 as a refund after filing in spring 2028.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the 2027 W-4 form change?
The core structure — Steps 1–5, the Step 4(b) deductions line, the multiple-jobs worksheet — is not scheduled to change for 2027. What changes every January is the IRS withholding tables behind it, which are updated for the new inflation-adjusted brackets. Your existing W-4 keeps working; the math under it just shifts.
When should I file a new W-4 for 2027?
January 2027, or as soon as you can estimate your overtime, tips, and other OBBBA deductions for the year. Payroll applies a new W-4 within 1–2 pay cycles. If you miss January, a mid-year revision still recovers the remaining months.
Where exactly do the OBBBA deductions go on the W-4?
Step 4(b). The Deductions Worksheet asks for your itemized or standard deduction estimate — add your expected OBBBA deductions on top of the projected 2027 standard deduction ($16,600 single / $33,200 joint). That lowers the income your employer runs through the withholding tables.
Why doesn't payroll withhold less automatically?
The IRS withholding tables are built around a typical taxpayer with no OBBBA deductions. They don't know you worked 400 hours of overtime or paid $8,000 of qualified car loan interest. Without a W-4 adjustment, the tax on those amounts is withheld all year and returned as a refund the next spring — an interest-free loan to the Treasury.
Is it risky to cut withholding in 2027?
Under-withholding beyond $1,000 owed at filing can trigger penalties unless you meet a safe harbor: paying 90% of 2027 tax or 100% of 2026 tax (110% if 2026 AGI topped $150,000). If your overtime fluctuates week to week, shade your Step 4(b) estimate conservative or skip the adjustment and take the refund.
Do the OBBBA deductions expire?
They run through tax year 2028 under current law. The caps ($12,500/$25,000 overtime, $25,000 tips, $10,000 car loan, $6,000 senior) are fixed dollar amounts — not inflation-indexed — so their real value shrinks each year. Congress would need to act to extend them past 2028.
