OBBBA Tax Deduction FAQ

Answers to common questions about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act tax deductions.

Can I claim both overtime and tips deductions?

Yes. They are separate deductions. You can claim both on the same return, up to $12,500/$25,000 for overtime and $25,000 for tips.

Does "no tax on overtime" mean my overtime is tax-free?

No. Only the premium portion (extra 0.5×) is deductible, and only up to $12,500/$25,000. FICA taxes still apply to all wages including overtime.

I'm self-employed. Do I qualify for overtime or tips deductions?

It depends on which one. The overtime deduction is W-2 only — 1099 and self-employed income does not qualify. The tips deduction, however, can be claimed by self-employed tipped workers (limited to the net income of that specific business), as long as the tips were reported on a 1099 or your return.

How much of my overtime pay do I actually get back?

Your savings equal the premium portion × your marginal tax rate — never the full overtime check. In the 22% bracket, every dollar of qualified OT premium returns 22 cents of federal income tax; FICA (7.65%) is not refunded. See the overtime calculator page for a full breakdown.

What is 'OB' or 'OBB' on my W-2 Box 14?

Employers use Box 14 (an informational box) for amounts that don't fit standard boxes. Labels like 'OB', 'OBB', or 'OT Prem' typically refer to OBBBA-related amounts — often qualified overtime premium or reported tips. For 2025 most employers are not required to break these out separately, so Box 14 codes vary by payroll provider. Our W-2 reporting guide lists common labels.

What form do I use to claim these deductions?

IRS Schedule 1-A, filed with Form 1040, starting tax year 2025. This is a new form created specifically for OBBBA deductions.

Does my state honor these deductions?

State conformity varies. This calculator only estimates federal savings. Check your state's tax authority for conformity rules.

How do I find my overtime premium amount?

Check W-2 Box 14 (look for 'OT Pay' or 'OT Premium'), your final 2025 paystub, or ask your payroll department. For 2026+, employers must report it on your W-2.

Is the senior deduction in addition to the standard deduction?

Yes. It is an additional deduction on top of the standard or itemized deduction. If both spouses are 65+, each can claim $6,000.

Does the car loan deduction apply to used cars?

No. It applies to loans for new vehicles assembled in the United States. Check your VIN to confirm assembly location.

What happens after 2028?

These deductions are scheduled to expire after tax year 2028 unless extended by Congress.

Can I amend a prior-year return to claim these?

No. These deductions only exist starting tax year 2025. They cannot be claimed on older returns.

Are these deductions or credits?

They are deductions — they reduce your taxable income, not your tax bill directly. The actual tax savings equals the deduction amount multiplied by your marginal tax rate.

Can I claim the car loan interest and overtime deduction if I'm above the income limit?

Each deduction has its own income limits. The car loan deduction phases out at lower incomes ($100K/$200K) than overtime/tips ($150K/$300K). Check each calculator to see if you qualify.
