Employee vs Booth Renter: The Line That Decides Everything
| Your setup | Tips deduction? |
|---|---|
| W-2 commission stylist | Yes |
| W-2 hourly + tips | Yes |
| Booth renter (1099 / self-pay) | No — not W-2 employment |
| Freelance bridal/MUA (1099) | No |
Roughly half of working stylists rent booths — if that is you, this deduction does not apply, but your equipment and supply expenses remain deductible as business costs under self-employment rules.
Worked Example: W-2 Commission Stylist
Dana, a W-2 stylist at $16/hour base plus commissions, keeps about $230/week in card and cash tips — $12,000/year. Single, MAGI $38,000.
- • Qualified tips (above 2024 baseline, under $25,000 cap): ~$12,000
- • 12% bracket → $1,440 back
- • 22% bracket → $2,640 back
Keep Your Tip Trail
Card tips are already tracked by the salon POS. Cash and app tips need your own records — a simple weekly log works. You will need both 2024 and 2025 totals to compute the deduction at filing time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do hairstylists qualify for the tips deduction?
W-2 salon employees do. Booth renters and chair renters who are self-employed do NOT — the OBBBA tips deduction requires W-2 employment where tips are reported by the salon.
I rent my chair — why don't I qualify?
Booth renters are independent contractors. The statute is explicit: qualified tips are those received in the course of employment with W-2 wages, above the 2024 baseline. If you get a 1099 or no tax form from the salon, your tips do not qualify.
What about commission stylists?
Commission-based W-2 stylists qualify. If the salon reports your wages and your tips on a W-2, your tips above the 2024 baseline are deductible, up to $25,000 single / $50,000 MFJ.
Do tips from retail product sales count?
Tips are gratuities for service — a tip left after a haircut or color qualifies. Commissions on product sales are wages, not tips, and do not qualify.
How much does a typical W-2 stylist save?
A stylist keeping $12,000/year in tips in the 22% bracket saves about $2,640 in federal income tax. In the 12% bracket, about $1,440.
Venmo/CashApp tips — do they count?
Yes, if they are genuine gratuities from clients for your salon work and you are a W-2 employee. They must be reported as tip income. Payments that are service fees you set (like a stylist charging their own prices on a rental basis) point to self-employment, which does not qualify.
